I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my support for stronger action to reduce and ultimately end the use of animals in scientific testing and research in the UK.

​

Animal testing continues to take place in the UK for a range of purposes, including research into human and animal diseases, the development of medicines and the assessment of the safety of chemicals and other substances. I am particularly concerned about the continued use of dogs and other animals in procedures that can cause significant suffering.

 

In 2023, more than 2 million procedures were carried out on animals in Great Britain, including procedures involving thousands of dogs. I believe that where scientifically valid alternatives exist, they should be prioritised and the use of animals should be reduced as quickly as possible.

I welcome the Government's commitment to reducing reliance on animals in scientific research and developing alternative approaches. However, I believe that further action is needed to ensure that this ambition results in meaningful and measurable reductions in animal use and ultimately the replacement of animal testing wherever scientifically possible.

I therefore urge you to support stronger measures to phase out the use of animals in scientific procedures, encourage investment in non-animal research methods and ensure that the UK's approach continues to move towards a future where animals are no longer used unnecessarily in research and testing.

I would also be grateful if you could raise this issue with the relevant Minister and let me know your position on reducing and ultimately ending the use of animals in scientific procedures.
